If so, be advised that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has ordered numerous recalls of many of the batches of these defective hypertension drugs. That’s because generic Valsartan has cancer-causing impurities containing high levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine or NDMA which can cause cancer. The FDA has recalled many popular drugs with high levels of NDMA including Zantac, Metformin and Valsartan.

Valsartan Recall
The FDA recently announced a national recall of some versions of generic valsartan and valsartan HCTZ high blood pressure medications. This recall was made when it was discovered that the drugs could be contaminated with an impurity called NMDA, or N-nitrosodimethylamine. That is a human carcinogen, meaning it’s capable of causing cancer in human tissue, even if absorbed in very low levels. The FDA’s recall on July 13, 2018, was its largest ever Class 1 FDA recall. The original BP drug with valsartan, Diovan, is not involved in the recall, but rather only generic versions of valsartan which have followed.

Valsartan History
Valsartan was approved by the FDA in 2005 and was first sold by Novartis Pharmaceuticals under the brand name Diovan to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and congestive heart failure. Hypertension affects about one third of Americans and is big business for pharmaceutical companies. Indeed, by 2012 Diovan had annual sales of over $2 billion in the U.S. and $6 billion worldwide.
In 2014 Novartis’ Diovan patent expired and valsartan soon became available in generic versions of valsartan and valsartan HCTZ. It’s known that about 1.5 million persons took the drug over the past four years alone, so contamination has been a danger for at least that long. Many contaminated pills were manufactured in China and imported from China, then were sold by American-based companies.
Among them is Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd., which has recalled 14 lots of valsartan/amlodipine/HCTZ tablets because of possible trace amounts of the impurity found in products coming from Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals in China. Insurer Humana alone has sent about 2 million recall letters to persons taking valsartan. On March 12, 2019 the FDA approved a new generic version of Valsartan (Diovan) due to severe shortages of these medications due to the massive recalls.
